Colour My Strings An Inclusive Violin-Based Music Education Programme Beginning in Senior Infants or First Class, Free of charge, for one full school year, with a subsidized Follow-On After-School Facility available in subsequent years.
This unique project began in September 2012. All Senior Infants or First Class students have taken part in a full school year of up to 30 small-group ‘free’ lessons with Ms Lucy Tanner (a professional violinist and violin teacher). Up to 20 children per year progress to the After-School Club for minimum tuition cost. The children rent a school violin and music book. Moyderwell Mercy Primary School continues to offer this inclusive, musical experience to all children with the continued support from our patrons and supporters (Bons Secours Hospital, Lee Strand, Kerry School of Music, Hugh Culloty Music Shop), without whom this project would not successfully continue. We hold an ‘End of Year Music Concert, which features these students, the Kerry School of Music Junior Orchestra and talented other musicians of Moyderwell Mercy Primary School. In May 2016, our Follow-On Violin Students were assessed for the first time, through the Royal Irish Academy of Music ‘Cara’ Programme and achieve distinction. An opportunity is offered to our fourth year students to transfer to Group Tuition at the Kerry School of Music., where they can avail of the opportunity to play in the Junior Orchestra and other ensembles. Moyderwell Mercy Primary is committed to the on-going support of education through violin-training, regardless of socio-economic advantage or otherwise.
